Term 4

Year 5   Newsletter                     Term 4

Welcome back to another action-packed, busy yet very exciting term.

Our 2 main topics for term 4 is Health (Change, Loss and Grief) and Technology. This health programme develops aspects such as:

·         Understanding change and loss

·         Understanding the feelings of grief

·         Coping with disappointment, loss and grief

We also have an exciting Technology unit planned where children will undertake planning to identify the key stages and resources required to develop an outcome. The challenge is to draft a plan for their own miniature dragster: a sleek, super-light car powered by a carbon dioxide (CO2) canister. Once they’ve been designed, built and primed to perfection, the cars will be pitted against each other in a race to find the fastest.

In Maths, we will continue our cross-grouping for Number on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays with a focus on number strategies and in Strand our focus is Measurement – Volume and Capacity.

In PE we resume with Aquatics (swimming and waterwise) as well as Athletics (run, jump and throw) and it is expected that all children participate unless they have a valid medical reason.

As always in Term 4, we look forward to designing and making Christmas crafts and also practising our Christmas songs for the Festival of Song on Wednesday 12 December.

Attached to this newsletter is our Term Overview, showing all curriculum areas and topics to be covered this term.

Welcome back to term 3

Our topic for term 3 has a Social Studies focus namely: Sustainability – Our World. The main
objective is to gain knowledge, skills and experiences to understand how people view and
use places differently (Level 3 New Zealand Curriculum). Using the Olympics as a point of
reference, we will be looking closely at countries around the world, their geographical
features, climate, culture and other environmental issues. We will write information reports
and explanations about various aspects relating to these countries.
In Maths, we continue our cross-grouping for Number on Mondays, Tuesdays and
Wednesdays and in Strand on Thursdays and Fridays, we continue with Geometry and
Measurement (Time).
PE is integrated with Te Reo Maori, where children will explore Te Ao Kori and learn the
skills of stick games, Ti rakau. Class PE sessions also include invasion games.
Our major school focus the term will be our school production “Sucked In” (Years 4 – 6).
Year 5s have the opportunity to take part as actors, dancers, choir or stage-hands. The
children will have many songs to learn over the next few weeks, with the production being
held over 3 nights in week 10.
Upcoming events include a speaker from Vector Electricity, the PTA Map-a-thon and a trip
to Kiwi capers concert in the Aotea Centre.
